4-D Photoacoustic Tomography

چکیده
Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) offers three-dimensional (3D) structural and functional imaging of living biological tissue with label-free, optical absorption contrast. These attributes lend PAT imaging to a wide variety of applications in clinical medicine and preclinical research. Despite advances in live animal imaging with PAT, there is still a need for 3D imaging at centimeter depths in real-time. We report the development of four dimensional (4D) PAT, which integrates time resolutions with 3D spatial resolution, obtained using spherical arrays of ultrasonic detectors. The 4D PAT technique generates motion pictures of imaged tissue, enabling real time tracking of dynamic physiological and pathological processes at hundred micrometer-millisecond resolutions. The 4D PAT technique is used here to image needle-based drug delivery and pharmacokinetics. We also use this technique to monitor 1) fast hemodynamic changes during inter-ictal epileptic seizures and 2) temperature variations during tumor thermal therapy.

Prospects of photoacoustic tomography.
Commercially available high-resolution three-dimensional optical imaging modalities-including confocal microscopy, two-photon microscopy, and optical coherence tomography-have fundamentally impacted biomedicine. Unfortunately, such tools cannot penetrate biological tissue deeper than the optical transport mean free path (approximately 1 mm in the skin). Photoacoustic tomography, which combines ...
متن کاملCompressed-sensing photoacoustic computed tomography in vivo with partially known support
Compressed sensing (CS) can recover sparse signals from undersampled measurements. In this work, we have developed an advanced CS framework for photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT). During the reconstruction, a small part of the nonzero signals’ locations in the transformed sparse domain is used as partially known support (PKS). PACT reconstructions have been performed with under-sampled in...
متن کاملPhotoacoustic Tomography of Human Hepatic Malignancies Using Intraoperative Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Imaging
Recently, fluorescence imaging following the preoperative intravenous injection of indocyanine green has been used in clinical settings to identify hepatic malignancies during surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of photoacoustic tomography using indocyanine green as a contrast agent to produce representative fluorescence images of hepatic tumors by visualizing the spatial...
متن کاملModeling Photoacoustic Tomography using k-Wave
Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is a hybrid imaging technique that offers similar medical potential as ultrasound and optical imaging. Although efforts to innovate Photoacoustic scanners have been scarce, newer developments such as k-Wave will enable their optimal imaging capability. Despite k-Wave’s ability to simulate PAT, few researchers utilize this technology. Thus, this project explored th...

Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is an emerging non-invasiveimaging technique with great potential for a wide range of biomedicalimaging applications. However, the conventional PAT reconstructionalgorithms often provide distorted images with strong artifacts in caseswhen the signals are collected from few measurements or over an aperturethat does not enclose the object. In thi...
